140 Years Steiff

Those who believe in themselves are free

The story of an extraordinary woman and a unique company

The story of children’s dreams come true: As an energetic young girl, Margarete Steiff fought for her place in life, against much resistance.
With a pin cushion in the shape of a small stuffed elephant, she wrote the first chapter of the unprecedented success story, which is still being continued today, over 135 years later.
Thanks to the loving dedication and quality consciousness of all the employees, the story of Margarete Steiff and Margarete Steiff GmbH remain inseparable from each other.

Company History

When Margarete Steiff founded her plush toy company in 1880, the first toy she sold from her factory was a little elephant. In the anniversary year of 2020, we are celebrating 140 years of the collection. All its representatives wear the special little elephant logo “140 Years of Steiff”.

Paddy Teddy bear is a whole 35 cm tall and made of the very finest mohair. Of course, his colour is the typical blond with a white front insert. Paddy is 5-way jointed so that he can be placed in any number of positions. His soles and paws are made of felt. With black nose.

The elephant is 22 cm tall and made of the finest grey mohair. The corners of the eyes and the inner ears are produced using complex airbrushing. As well as the tail. The soles are made of velvet soft felt. The attractive saddlecloth on its back is a special decorative touch. It is edged with trim and decorated with a pompom.

Measuring 10 cm and with a coat of brown-tipped mohair, this fully jointed Teddy bear looks out of his felt bag with an endearingly cheeky expression. He loves his bag – after all, it allows him to see the world from a higher perspective. Which is why he always heads back there after every outing or adventure ... The lovingly created little guy from the 140th Anniversary Collection is available exclusively from www.steiff.com and www.steiffusa.com and simply can’t wait to go off on his travels!

The extremely noble 25 cm tall little elephant with his typical tusks was made of cuddly soft white plush fabric. His inner ears and soles are in beige. The sewn-on saddlecloth is blue and has a yellow border. The tip of his tail is grey.

Josey Grizzly bear is made of black cuddly soft plush fabric. He is 27 cm tall. His paws are light brown. His mouth, nose bridge and paws are painted using elaborate airbrush applications.

The 10 cm tall little elephant with rattle is made of ultra fine cream coloured plush fabric for baby soft skin. The saddlecloth is elaborately stitched in yellow and blue. A rattle is sewn into its tummy.

Back when the “Elefäntle” paved the way for the first ever toy factory, its “big brother” had yet to arrive on the scene. However, it was not long before Richard Steiff introduced the Teddy bear that would go on to attain unimaginable levels of success. And even though the Steiff world would later produce many different types of toy animals, it is these two – the little felt elephant and the mohair Teddy bear – that still symbolise its rich history. Even in the anniversary year 2020, they are still inseparable.

This white wool felt elephant conveys its sense for classic design with its proudly raised S-shaped trunk and dapper saddlecloth. Here, the initials “AS” bear witness to the fact that Anna Steiff received the very first “Elefäntle” as a gift from her sister-in-law Margarete. The removable saddlecloth is attached by hand with 14 black pins that match the elephant’s glass bead eyes.

Joseph Grizzly bear looks like he comes straight out of the deep forests of Canada: his inimitable personality is shaped by his long, powerful body and deep brown coat of finest mohair, not to mention his sonorous growler and distinctively printed soles and paws. His gold-plated “Button in Ear” is worn with pride together with a large “Elefäntle” pendant marking the 140th Anniversary Collection.
