Carl little penguin belongs to a special toy plush collection created by Steiff in collaboration with National Geographic. The collection is comprised of animals photographed by Joel Sartore as part of the National Geographic Photo Ark initiative, a multi-year effort that uses the power of photography to inspire people to help protect species before it's too late. Joel's photos highlight at risk animal species throughout the world. When you shop with us, you help further the work of our scientists, explorers, and educators around the world. Carl little penguin from Steiff’s National Geographic series represents the world’s smallest penguin species. These little penguins live in colonies right by the water in New Zealand and Australia – in habitats like rock crevices and dugouts, for example. They go diving for food during the day and feed their young by night. However unfortunately, fishing nets, polluted water and disruptions to their breeding colonies, as well as predators, are reducing their population numbers and putting the longevity of this specie at risk! Measuring 25 cm tall, Carl little penguin is made of soft, cosy faux fur in cream and dark brown. This cuddly, sociable companion is sure to get your child’s attention. He will capture their heart with his warm gaze, unique wings and cute little feet. Once it gets dark, these little penguins waddle quickly out of the water and back to their colony – there this is so much fun for your child to re-enact! Children can give their imagination free rein. Plus elaborate airbrushing on the face, feet and belly make him appear particularly life-like – the artists at the Steiff factory have done a fantastic job.
