“I’m afraid we’re not going to London after all.”- said Aunt Lucy “Why not?”- said Uncle Pastuzo “We have a cub to raise.”- said Aunt Lucy “If we look after this bear, I have a feeling he’ll go far.”- But alas circumstances change. An unkind earthquake strikes their home in deepest darkest Peru and poor Uncle Pastuzo dies from his injuries leaving Aunt Lucy alone to raise the little cub. The only belonging saved from the earthquake is Uncle Pastuzo’s big battered red hat which the little cub adopts for himself. Aunt Lucy longs to take them both to London but realizing her age is against her and that she soon must move into the Home for Retired Bears in Lima she prepares her little cub for a big adventure he must face alone. “Long ago, people in England sent their children by train with labels around their necks, so they could be taken care of by complete strangers in the country side where it was safe. They will not have forgotten how to treat strangers.” Said Aunt Lucy With a label round his neck inscribed ‘Please look after this bear’, a suitcase full of marmalade and his Uncle’s battered red hat the little cub sets off to London. And so begins the wonderful adventures of Paddington Bear. Paddington constantly writes to his beloved Aunt Lucy about his new life in London and dreams one day she will visit him there. “Aunt Lucy said that if we’re kind and polite, the world will be right.”- Paddington
