Accessibility Statement

1. Scope

This accessibility statement applies to the websites www.steiff.com and corporate.steiff.com, operated by Margarete Steiff GmbH, Richard-Steiff-Straße 4, 89537 Giengen an der Brenz, Germany.

Our aim is to make the website accessible in accordance with the provisions of the German Act on Equal Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities (BGG), the German Ordinance on Accessible Information Technology (BITV 2.0) and the EU Directive (EU) 2016/2102.

2. Status of conformity with the requirements

The website steiff.com is partially compliant with the requirements of BITV 2.0. The non-conformities and exceptions are listed below.

3. Non-accessible content

The contents listed below are currently not or only partially accessible. They are scheduled to be remedied as part of ongoing improvements.

Text alternatives & perceivability

Some graphical and visual contents are currently not fully provided with text alternatives or are not accessible to screen readers.

  • Alternative texts (alt-texts) in some cases do not sufficiently describe the content of informative images or graphics.

  • For decorative images, the alt attribute is not always correctly set to empty.

  • Text content is embedded in images and therefore not recognized as real text.

  • Missing text alternatives and ARIA attributes in the shopping cart prevent correct recognition by screen readers.

  • Certain icons (e.g., trash bin, edit) are not visible to a screen reader.

Labeling & recognizability of controls

Some interactive controls are not sufficiently labeled or semantically correctly marked.

  • Non-specific link texts for call-to-action elements.

  • Missing labels on input fields, checkboxes and radio buttons.

  • Missing or incomplete labels for input fields.

  • On form pages, labels are not correctly linked to the input fields.

Operability & control of controls

Some interactive elements currently do not meet all usability requirements.

  • Icons such as search, favourites, trash or colour-selection are smaller than the recommended minimum size of 24 × 24 px.

  • The site navigation on product list pages behaves inconsistently.

Semantic structure & relationships

Parts of the semantic structure are incomplete or not correctly marked.

  • Inconsistent heading hierarchy and missing heading elements.

  • Missing semantic markup in navigation, language settings and dealer search.

  • Radio buttons in the checkout are not correctly grouped.

  • Missing or incomplete ARIA markup of the language combobox.

  • Status messages (e.g., “Item added to cart”) are not announced by screen readers.

  • Error messages are not marked as such (role="alert" / aria-live).

Contrast & readability

Some texts and graphical elements do not meet the required minimum contrast ratios.

  • Text and background in some places do not achieve a contrast ratio of 4.5 :1.

  • Buttons, links and visual indicators are below the minimum contrast of 3 :1.

  • On 200 % zoom some contents are cut off or become unreadable.

  • Adjustments to text spacing lead to layout shifts.

Input errors & forms

Forms and error messages are partially not accessible.

  • Missing associations between labels and input fields.

  • Input fields without label or without autocomplete.

  • Mandatory fields are only marked by colour or symbol, without textual indication.

  • Error or missing error messages for incorrect input.

  • Overlapping contents in select fields.

Keyboard operability & focus management

Some contents and controls are currently not fully operable via keyboard.

  • Fly-outs (e.g., search, “My Steiff” and “Shopping Cart”) are not reachable or closable via keyboard.

  • Dropdowns cannot be closed via keyboard.

  • Slider arrows shift when focused.

  • Contents appear only on hover and are not reachable by keyboard.

  • Interactive elements are not consistently focusable.

4. Preparation of this statement

This statement was prepared on 22 October 2025. The accessibility review was conducted through manual testing, automated checks and user tests with assistive technologies.

5. Planned improvements

Margarete Steiff GmbH is continuously working to improve the accessibility of its websites.
Planned measures in particular:

  • Revision of all alt-texts and semantic structures.

  • Optimization of keyboard navigation and focus order.

  • Adjustment of colour contrast and text readability.

  • Barrier-free design of all forms.

  • Addition of skip-links and ARIA attributes.

Our aim is to bring the website into full compliance with BITV 2.0 and WCAG 2.1 AA by mid-2026.
